Heart of the University, Faculty Retreat Series 2009-2010
The
Heart of the University Retreat Series is offered primarily for the faculty who, as the heart of the University, express its deepest convictions by their teaching. It is led by members of the priest community, which stands at the very heart of the faculty. It is about the human heart as a place of encounter with God.
These retreats will give faculty and administrators of all faiths the opportunity for quiet reflection guided by four members of the priest community. The theme of the series is captured by the following:
The heart is the dwelling-place where I am, where I live; according to the Semitic or Biblical expression, the heart is the place “to which I withdraw.” The heart is our hidden center, beyond the grasp of our reason and of others; only the Spirit of God can fathom the human heart and know it fully. The heart is the place of decision, deeper than our psychic drives. It is the place of truth, where we choose life or death. It is the place of encounter, because as image of God we live in relation: it is the place of covenant.
(Catechism of the Catholic Church, # 2563)

Second Faculty Retreat, We Teach Who We Are: Authenticity in the ClassroomDirected by Rev. Paul Holmes
“Deep in the heart of every university are the hearts of its teachers, and as we explore the university's identity, we naturally need to explore ourselves. Ultimately, whatever our discipline, we teach who we are - `professing' our worldview, our ethics, our values, as well as our hopes and dreams.”
A priest of the Archdiocese of Newark since 1981, Father Holmes is Executive Vice President for Administration. He has taught moral and sacramental theology at Seton Hall since 1988. In 1999-2000, he was invited to be the first occupant of the Carl J. Peter Chair of Preaching at the North American College in Rome. Father Holmes received a master's degree in liturgical theology from Yale University and his doctorate from the Angelicum in Rome.
