About the Program
For the past 6 years, the Division of Volunteer Efforts has run an international service trip to El Salvador. The DOVE service trip to Haiti is a new program for the 2008-2009 school year.
Students must apply and interview for a spot on the trip. After acceptance, they are required to attend weekly meetings and fundraise $1300 to cover trip expenses.
In Haiti, the group will volunteer at several service sites, and will be housed at the Maison Fortuné Orphanage, located in Hinche on the central plateau. Students will play soccer with the kids, teach English classes and help out with any special needs of the orphanage. Students will also be volunteering at the local Missionaries of Charity hospital.
Several of the DOVE staff members have spent significant time in Haiti. David Peterson spent a year of post-undergraduate service at the Maison Fortuné Orphanage. Both Michelle Sheridan and David traveled to Haiti from August 30-September 6, in the midst of Hurricane Hanna. Tom Russomano and David led an informal trip of students to Hinche over the 2007 Thanksgiving week.
