Releasing the DOVEs: El Salvador
DOVE (Division of Volunteer Efforts)

AlejandroSince 2004, the Division of Volunteer Efforts at Seton Hall University has been organizing volunteer trips to one of the poorest communities in El Salvador.

What started as just a few students spending their spring break serving others has now grown into a considerable program that sends no less than 15 students with 2 priests and 2 DOVE staff members to San Miguel several times each year.

El SalvadorService, faith and community are at the heart of DOVE’s trip to El Salvador.  For one whole week, 20 students get the chance to truly live and work for others.  Before they even leave Seton Hall, the students are divided into groups and assigned to worksites in San Miguel.  These include two orphanages, a special education school, a center for sexually abused girls, and a nursing home.  At their sites, our students learn that presence and love are all that matter.

A typical day:

7 a.m.
Wake up/breakfast
8:30 a.m. Morning prayer
9 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Work sites
3-5 p.m. Soccer with the locals
5 p.m. Mass at the orphanage
6 p.m. Eat at the seminary
7:30 p.m. Reflection

After the week is over, students often come home with a passion to serve on a larger scale.  Our first group of travelers were so moved by their experience that upon their return, they raised enough money to pay for a school bus for the children of the Catholic Orphanage.

Since then, the tradition has flourished.  Generous donations have provided:

  • Much needed repairs and new bathrooms
  • Healthcare for a sister afflicted with cancer
  • Hot meal delivery cart for the nursing home
  • A new psychological center and full-time salaried psychologist for the orphan
  • Clothing and hygiene items
  • School and art supplies

Each student is required to raise $1300 for their participation in the trip.  This sum covers plane tickets, cab fares to sites, as well as food and lodging in San Miguel.

If you are interested in assisting the students with the cost of the trip, or any of our other projects for the El Salvador community, please send a check* to the following address:
