Starting with all freshmen who enter Seton Hall University in fall 2006, a writing test on either the SAT or ACT assessments will be required. However, this writing test will be used for a correlation study only and will not be used for admission or scholarship decisions.
Why require a test that will not be used for admission and scholarships? We believe the best way to make admission and scholarship decisions is to gather the most information possible that informs us of a student’s likelihood of success at Seton Hall. After evaluation of the new writing tests by our admission counselors, in conjunction with the Educational Opportunity Program, Freshman Studies and English departments, we believe these new tests may help us learn more about our students. However, they are new and unproven in their ability to tell us about Seton Hall results, even though they have been tested extensively in national trials.
In the 2006-2007 academic year, we will be working with the College Board (and possibly the ACT) to study the correlation between test scores on the new writing exams and the performance of new students who enter in fall 2006 in English courses. We will examine overall grade point average, specifically, and retention, generally. To do this, we must have a full set of scores for students.
Why do I need to send an official score report?
In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the writing tests, we will need to view student’s writing online. This is only possible when students send an official score report to the University.
In order to send an official score report, either include Seton Hall University on the list of schools you choose when registering for the exam or request an official score report from the College Board or ACT, using the codes for Seton Hall listed below:
- SAT code for Seton Hall University: 2811
- ACT code for Seton Hall University: 2606
Where can I get more information on the new SAT and ACT exams?
The best information comes directly from the College Board (the organization that administers the SAT) and ACT. You can register online for exams, read more information on the existing and new portions of the tests and find out where the test can be taken in your area.
