This chapter analyzes Elizabeth Inchbald's essays on the plays of
Shakespeare, revealing how Inchbald's criticism is more than a bridge
between the eighteenth-century and Romantic schools of Shakespeare
criticism. Inchbald's essays also analyze Shakespeare's plays from the
perspective of a fellow playwright, as well as a woman and a Catholic.
