Peer Reviewed: Elizabeth Inchbald’s Shakespeare Criticism

In Shakespeare and the Culture of Romanticism, edited by Joseph M. Ortiz, 31-50. Burlington, VT.: Ashgate, September 2013

Elizabeth Inchbald’s Shakespeare Criticism Karen B. Gevirtz, Ph.D.
Department of English

This chapter analyzes Elizabeth Inchbald's essays on the plays of Shakespeare, revealing how Inchbald's criticism is more than a bridge between the eighteenth-century and Romantic schools of Shakespeare criticism. Inchbald's essays also analyze Shakespeare's plays from the perspective of a fellow playwright, as well as a woman and a Catholic.
