Dir. of Clinical Ed., Assistant Professor
School of Health and Medical Sciences
Attention to student needs in clinical preparation is my primary concern.
Profile
I started with the PA program at Seton Hall University in 1997. My primary responsibility in the program is the coordination of our student's' clinical schedules. Other areas of responsibility include; co-coordination and lecturing in the Fundamental's of Clinical Medicine course, instructor of the Clinical Therapeutics course, instructor of the Health Care Policy Course, as well as team teaching participation in several other core PA courses. I'm also proud to serve as the faculty advisor to our active student society, the Physician Assistant Student Society of Seton Hall University (PASSSHU). Additionally, I coach our student Challenge Bowl Team (sort of a medical "Jeopardy" quiz contest) entry in the annual American Academy of Physician Assistants Conference.
I have been in allied health medicine for nearly 40 years, 32 of them as a board certified physician assistant. As a PA I worked in urology, general surgery, and emergency medicine for 10 years. For another 10 years I worked in the health care device industry as a medical liaison and international product manager. Currently, in addition to my Seton Hall responsibilities, I practice clinically one day a week in family practice and substance abuse medicine.
I am working toward the completion of my PhD in health sciences and am in the dissertation phase of that effort. My dissertation research involves admissions criteria and their ability to predict successful outcomes in PA education.
Personally I believe clinical pedagogy is the unique opportunity to translate academia into specific clinical skill sets. The effective clinical educator demonstrates how didactic knowledge and basic sciences becomes “hands-on” skills through a mix of experiential and established instruction techniques. PA faculty have a short time to relate a broad based understanding of medical knowledge and recent research. Putting those knowledge sets into practice as early as possible is an important aspect of our program.
My areas of interest include family practice, emergency medicine, cardiology, and health care policy.
