Sergiu Gorun

Sergiu M. Gorun, Ph.D.

Associate Professor

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry

Dr. Gorun's research is at the interface of bioinorganic chemistry, materials science and catalysis.

Sergiu Gorun is interested in the reactivity of artificial enzymes and related materials. Current projects are in the area of oxygen activation via energy or electron transfer, with application to catalysis, biomedicine and environmental science. Metal-organic materials that exhibit no C-H bonds, while being reactive are of particular interest, as reagents in solution, in biological environments and in the solid-state. Their atomic and solid-state structures, ability to capture energy and transfer electrons are being elucidated using a variety of physical methods. Other functionalities are also explored.

His research has received support from the Department of Energy, the Department of Defense, the National Science Foundation as well as industry. Professor Gorun is currently the Director of the Center for Functional Materials of Seton Hall University.
