Mara C. Podvey, Ph.D., OTR

Associate Professor and Director of Clinical Education

Department of Occupational Therapy

My role is to help students develop the skills necessary to practice in a dynamic health care environment.

Ten years after graduating from the Occupational Therapy program at Seton Hall University, I have returned to the department where I received my training. As a faculty member, I feel that my role is to help students to develop the entry-level skills necessary to practice in a dynamic health care environment, while simultaneously instilling in them a sense of responsibility to their clients and their profession. As a Director of Clinical Education, I am committed to helping foster a strong bridge between the academic and clinical environments to the benefit of students and clinicians alike. My personal research interests are in the area of the transition from early intervention to preschool special education for children with disabilities and their families. I also am interested in researching current clinical practices in pediatrics.

My clinical practice has been in the pediatric arena. While I have worked with multiple pediatric populations, the bulk of my experience has been with preschool-aged children, as well as children with autism spectrum disorders. In 2003, I began my teaching career, and since then have taught courses in anatomy and physiology, lifespan development, pediatric practice, and research. In addition, I have served on the executive board of the New Jersey Occupational Therapy Association, and am currently on the editorial review board of the American Journal of Occupational Therapy, and have recently been elected as the New Jersey state representative to the Representative Assembly of the American Occupational Therapy Association.
