Susan A. Nolan, Ph.D.
Professor and Chair
Dr. Susan Nolan is a United Nations representative for the American Psychological Association.
I started my academic career at Seton Hall University in 1999 after receiving my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Northwestern University and completing my clinical internship through the Vanderbilt University/Nashville Department of Veterans Affairs Internship Consortium. Since arriving at Seton Hall, I've taught a range of courses, but particularly enjoy teaching Abnormal Psychology, International Psychology and Statistics. Over the years, I've explored engaging ways to teach statistics, and recently co-authored statistics textbooks, Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences (Worth, 2008) and Essentials of Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences (Worth, in press). I also have become increasingly involved in international psychology, developing a course on this topic at Seton Hall and serving as a United Nations representative for the American Psychological Association.
I am currently pursuing two lines of research, and welcome undergraduate and graduate student involvement in both. First, I am interested in perceptions of people with mental illness. Recent research examines the stigma associated with depression and anxiety and the ways in which gender plays a role in interpersonal interactions that involve a person with depression or anxiety. Second, with Seton Hall colleagues Dr. Janine Buckner and Dr. Cecilia Marzabadi, I also study the education and career trajectories of women and men pursuing professions in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.
