Profile

I specialize in the intersections between Catholic and Protestant ethics, moral philosophy, and political theory.

I specialize in ethics and my teaching interests focus on the intersections between Catholic and Protestant moral theology and social ethics, moral philosophy and political theory. My teaching areas also include the ethics of war, bioethics and the political morality of race and ethnicity.

My primary research in ethics focuses on the nature of moral deliberation: What are the mechanics of moral reasoning? How do we make moral judgments? I have pursued these questions by exploring how virtue ethics, aesthetics and perspectives on race can advance moral discourse, especially within the context of participatory, democratic politics.

At present, I am pursuing a number of projects including an exploration of Asian identity and theological ethics, a study on the implications of art theory and visual culture for political ethics and an interdisciplinary and ecumenical engagement of Jonathan Edwards’s moral thought.

I am the faculty coordinator of Seton Hall’s CORE 2101, and I am the co-editor of Christianity and Culture (Kendall Hunt, 2010), the textbook used for this university core program. A required course for all sophomores, Core 2101 examines the social relevance of faith and reason within the Catholic intellectual tradition. I am also the executive secretary and treasurer of the University Faculty Senate (academic year 2011-2012). In the Department of Religion, I serve as the faculty advisor to Seton Hall’s chapter of Theta Alpha Kappa, the national honor society for religious studies and theology. Our annual induction ceremony for new members is held in April of the spring semester.

I serve on the Editorial Board of the Journal of the Society of Christian Ethics, the Alumni Advisory Board of Yale University Divinity School (elected as Vice-Chair) and the Advisory Board of The Ethics Institute at Kent Place School in Summit, NJ. I am the past convener of the Religion and Society Section of the College Theology Society, and I am currently the co-convener of the Asian and Asian American Ethics Working Group of the Society of Christian Ethics.
