Nonprofit Sector Resource Institute

From the Director

Barkley CalkinsThe tradition of organized neighborliness is a distinctly American phenomenon. Not only is the collective activity of the nonprofit sector a major force economically, the individual organizations comprising the sector bring a creativity, sensitivity and passion that enriches our life as a nation. Nonprofits play a critical role in such diverse areas as the arts, the environment, human services, advocating for the disadvantaged, education, international affairs, and more.

In spite of its enormous contribution to our social well being, the nonprofit sector today finds itself under intense pressure. The demand for services, particularly human services, has continued to grow, while the availability of the financial and other resources needed to support those services has been adversely affected by our very slow recovery from recession. The appropriate role of government vs. the private sector – including the nonprofit sector -- in addressing human need is being vigorously debated. And the occasional story of mismanagement or malfeasance by charities threatens that ephemeral, yet critically important thing called the public trust.

The nonprofits that will thrive – not just survive – in the current environment are those that are able to adapt to rapidly changing times. Accountability and transparency have become critically important buzzwords. Sound governance, as well as management, is essential. The effective integration of strategic and action planning is required. Funders are encouraging strategic alliances.

Thus, at a time when the role of the nonprofit sector is more important than ever, its ability to effectively compete for resources is complicated by a powerful array of forces. In such an environment, the capacity building work of the Nonprofit Sector Resource Institute takes on special significance.

As described elsewhere on our web site, we continue to offer certificate programs in governance and management; to respond to inquiries on a variety of topics; and to host occasional forums on matters of current interest.

We encourage you to join the dialogue. Join our email list today to stay on top of current issues, hear about our programs and add your voice to the dynamic nonprofit environment.
