The Master of Divinity program is the main professional degree program preparing men for ministry in the Roman Catholic Church, primarily through ordination to the priesthood.
This degree offers the personal, academic, ministerial and spiritual foundations needed for those making a commitment to a life of service to the Church. The extensive theological training meets all requirements of the Program of Priestly Formation (Fifth Edition, 2005).

More than 150 Years of Preparing Men for the Priesthood at the Immaculate Conception Seminary
"Immaculate Conception Seminary gave me a chance to benefit from both Seminary and campus-wide activities. The variety of clerical and lay teachers gave me a wider Church perspective and a more integrated lens through which to view my future ministry. Spiritually, the Seminary allowed me the time and climate to grow closer to God and to others. Academically, it challenged me to become more organized, responsible, and to manage time well. It gave me a sense of accomplishment."Father Paul Importico
Our comprehensive curriculum consists of four components:
- Field education and theological reflection
- Spiritual formation
- M.Div. comprehensive projects
Classes are offered on Seton Hall University's campus in South Orange, New Jersey.
Over the course of this program, our students study the history of Christianity, explore moral theology and take classes on preaching, pastoral psychology and canon law of marriage.
The highly respected faculty of Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology is one of the largest of all the schools of theology in the United States. With hearts and minds committed to serving the Catholic Church, our professors -including priests, deacons, religious, and lay men and women -are national and international leaders who provide scholarly expertise and clarity on ethical and religious issues of our day. Leading authorities in their respective fields, our professors are in demand as lecturers, consultants, and commentators. Award-winning and acclaimed authors, they have published dozens of books and hundreds of articles, and have delivered thousands of presentations. They share their love of their faith with their students, encouraging them to learn and live the riches of Catholicism, as they journey closer to Christ and His Church. Ultimately, the professors seek to introduce the students to the Divine Teacher who is "the reason for this school. He is the unseen but ever present teacher in its classes. He is the model of its faculty and inspiration of its students." (Author Unknown).
Since 1861, Immaculate Conception Seminary has offered men preparing for the priesthood the human, spiritual, intellectual and pastoral formation essential for conversion to Jesus Christ -in an environment with all the theological and academic resources that a university has to offer. To supplement the four pillars of formation, we offer a variety of courses, retreats, lectures and workshops, giving students even more opportunities to strengthen their knowledge of the faith, pray and reflect, and learn the skills needed to serve God and His people.
