St. Francis Medical Center (SFMC) is a voluntary, nonprofit, 254-bed general hospital built by the Sisters of St. Francis of Glen Riddle. It is one of approximately 85 institutions of the Catholic Health East System, one of the largest multi-healthcare systems throughout the northeastern United States. The medical center is administered by a Board of Trustees who guide the administrative staff, led by the CEO and the Medical Staff, led by an elected president.

The mission of the medical center is to provide up-to-date effective, affordable health care to the members of the community it serves. In so doing, it provides educational experiences for its employees, attending staff and affiliates to enable them to maintain a high level of care. Where appropriate, the employees, medical staff and residents, and other students of the medical center participate in research activities, which ultimately benefit the community in which they serve. The hospital provides these services to the members of the community without regard to race, color, creed or ability to pay.

In order to meet its obligations regarding education and research, the hospital has established affiliations with several academic institutions in the area. The hospital's primary educational affiliation is with the Seton Hall University School of Health & Medical Sciences, which supports and enhances the residency programs in internal medicine and surgery. The medical center has an affiliation with the Fox Chase Cancer Center of Philadelphia, which supports its efforts to meet the needs of the cancer patients in this community.  St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center (SJRMC) of Paterson, New Jersey, a level II trauma center, is an integrated institution in the General Surgery Residency Program through the Seton Hall University School of Health & Medical Sciences.
