Technologically Up-to-Date Information with Clinically
Focused Coursework
Healthcare advances in the 21st century continue to accelerate at a rapid pace. Patient expectations, changing demographics and economic fluctuations challenge all health professions to remain receptive to change. The School of Health and Medical Sciences and its faculty know the importance of graduating highly educated and flexible health care professionals and leaders. That’s why we integrate the most technologically up-to-date information with dynamic clinically oriented coursework in our five entry-level and two post-professional graduate programs.
The breadth and depth of our sequenced curricula for each program, which is rooted in the foundational and health sciences, is tied to hands-on learning — in the laboratory, through diverse clinical experiences and through academic research with distinguished faculty. As a result, you gain the knowledge and real-world training necessary to enter your chosen practice environment. Whether you plan to serve as a faculty member, athletic trainer, occupational therapist, physical therapist, physician assistant, speech-language pathologist or a member of hospital administration, our programs bridge the gap between research and practice, ultimately preparing you for an enriching professional career.
Laboratory experiences and a myriad of clinical experiences distinguish our programs and enhance your classroom learning. Complete with state-of-the-art equipment that is consistent with contemporary clinical practice and research, our laboratories promote teaching and learning. You’ll examine patients, draw blood, practice injections, and learn a variety of diagnostic procedures and techniques in on-campus physical exam and clinical diagnostic labs. Our clinical teaching laboratories also focus on human performance, human physiology and biomechanics; our speech-language pathology laboratories feature state-of-the-art technology, allowing you to understand and experience equipment that you will encounter throughout your professional career. Cadaver lab, facilitated at St. Michael’s Medical Center in Newark, allows students to dissect and identify the human body’s intricate parts.
What really differentiates our programs from others are the diverse clinical opportunities we provide. To date, we have clinical affiliation agreements with more than 300 hospitals, schools, clinics, rehabilitation centers, private practices, and other agencies throughout New Jersey and the New York metropolitan area. We value experiential learning: That’s why we provide more hours of clinical experience than you may receive at other graduate schools. Rotations typically begin in your first semester, challenging you early on to integrate classroom knowledge with clinical learning in varied environments and professional settings. Because of this focus, our programs boast a 100 percent job placement rating; many of our students secure employment opportunities before graduation, and many have multiple employment offers.
Our focus is on the art and science of caring — we teach you how caring and compassionate leaders can use their skills to make their communities — and the world — a better place. And our graduates are successful, proving themselves to be leaders in their profession and in their communities.
