School of Health and Medical Sciences

The Art and Science of Caring
The goal of high-quality health care is not merely treating the sick. It focuses on illness prevention and the healing of the whole body. More than 150 years ago, Seton Hall’s founder, Bishop James Roosevelt Bayley, envisioned a home for the mind, heart and spirit of all students — a place dedicated to learning, service and leadership. In the School of Health and Medical Sciences, we take this mission seriously, as we teach the art and science of caring.

While we know that a strong science background can help you become skillful in the implementation of healthcare services and techniques, we also know that a caring and compassionate practitioner who can connect with patients and clients from all walks of life, gains trust and confidence. The art and science of caring — our mission — encompasses this total comprehensive approach to health care.

As a student in the School, you’ll learn about the “science” of your discipline and the evidence that substantiates the service delivery approaches for clients/patients and their illnesses and disorders. You’ll be provided with a wealth of opportunities to assess and treat patients in a myriad of clinical settings. We strive to develop caring and compassionate clinicians and healthcare leaders who possess the knowledge and skills to deliver the most efficacious clinical services — the “art” of their profession. This art also extends to the service learning component of our programs. As a student, you’ll have the opportunity to give back to the local community, providing services to those in desperate need. For the past year, speech-language pathology students, have provided speech, language and hearing screenings; evaluation; and referral and intervention to more than 100 preschool children in the Irvington Public School system, through a $76,000 grant from the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey. And the School will provide additional medical and hearing clinics to those less fortunate in the coming years.

In the classroom and in our clinical sites, we teach you that clinical techniques are not always cut and dry. We show you the art associated with the culling of the appropriate information obtained from a clinical procedure in order to determine the proper evaluation, diagnosis and follow-up care for the individual. We recognize that healing is multifaceted, requiring the participation of the individual with diverse cultural and personal needs, the hands-on skill and expertise of the healthcare professional, as well as state-of-the-art technology.

In order to develop healthcare professionals who encompass a comprehensive caring philosophy, we know we must nurture your heart, mind and spirit — for this is the foundation of successful leadership. Learn more about what the School of Health and Medical Sciences has to offer you.
