In response to increasing superintendent vacancies in New Jersey school districts, Seton Hall University’s Practicum for New Superintendents was created in 1999 to help first-time superintendents master the early challenges they face and encourage other educators to consider this career path. This program is now housed within the Institute for Education Leadership, Research and Renewal.
Under the leadership of an experienced superintendent, the new superintendent participates in monthly meetings with peers who share their experiences as superintendents. Also, the group’s leader is available by phone or e-mail for additional support. Topics for discussion include dealing with difficult employees, handling complaints, communicating with board members, time- and crisis- management, developing and managing school district budgets, and leading change.
The Practicum for New Superintendents is presented in partnership with the New Jersey Association of School Administrators as well as the New Jersey School Boards Association. This program has been selected as a model for national dissemination.
