The dual-degree program (BS/MSAT) is a combined program between the undergraduate Biology BS program in the College of Arts and Sciences and the Master of Science - Athletic Training (MSAT) program in the School of Health and Medical Sciences. This is a 3+2 dual degree program where the student takes classes for the first three years in the Department of Biological Sciences and the last two years at the School of Health and Medical Sciences. The mission of the B.S. part of BS/ MSAT program from the Department of Biological Sciences is to provide students with the knowledge of biological principles, empirical research, and integration of critical thinking. Required coursework in the B.S part of the dual degree program is infused with the following proficiencies: reading/writing, oral communication, information technology and numeracy. The integration of various scientific disciplines, as well as the application of modern technology are an integral part of the students' undergraduate studies. The curriculum prepares students to acquire the necessary knowledge and hands-on laboratory skills that will further advance them to the Masters in Athletic Training program in the School of Health and Medical Sciences. The learned knowledge and skill sets enable students to understand living systems, to become life-long learners in the Athletic Training career, and to contribute to the greater good by developing and sustaining ethical ideals through their medical stewardship.

Goal 1: Understand principles and concepts of biological sciences and cognate disciplines with an emphasis on anatomy and physiology

Objective 1: Understanding of structures, functions and classifications of organisms and biological systems
Objective 2: Understanding of cellular and molecular basis of life
Objective 3: Integration of chemistry/biochemistry, mathematics and/or physics into biological sciences
Objective 4: Understanding of human anatomy and physiology

Specifically, students will:

  1. Demonstrate understanding of the structure, function and classification of various organisms and biological systems
  2. Learn the complex biological concepts at the cellular and molecular level.
  3. Acquire understanding of chemistry, biochemistry, math, and physics.

Goal 2: Develop skills related to biological sciences and cognate disciplines
Objective 1: Research techniques and scientific methods
Objective 2: Information technology
Objective 3: Numeracy
Objective 4: Communication skills

Specifically, students will:
  1. Develop laboratory skills in biology.
  2. Demonstrate proficiencies in reading/writing, numeracy, oral communication and information technology.
  3. Utilize research techniques that will enable the student to understand scientific hypotheses and conclusions.


Goal 3: Apply knowledge and skills of biological sciences and cognate disciplines to graduate study and health care systems

Objective 1: Understand the practicality and applications of biological principles to the practice of Athletic Training.
Objective 2: Develop interpersonal skills and practical application of Athletic Training through observational training.
Objective 3: Apply biological knowledge and skills responsibly to Athletic Training health care systems and related settings

Specifically, students will apply knowledge and skills to the upper level undergraduate courses and the Athletic Training study and related care settings.
