Stillman School of Business

Overview

The mission of the Department of Accounting and Taxation is to prepare students to assume roles as accounting professionals in a global society and to advance the body of knowledge in the discipline. Our curricula, delivered in an environment characterized by small classes and extensive faculty student engagement, provide innovative and high-quality educational experiences that emphasize technical knowledge, analytical and communication skills, proficiency in information technology, and ethics. Our programs are strengthened both by the contributions made by our industry partners and the ethical philosophy of the University.

The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) requires that its members earn 150 college credits. The Master of Science in Professional Accounting in the Stillman School of Business is designed to be the “fifth year” of study, ultimately enabling you to meet the requirements to be licensed as a CPA in New Jersey and New York.

The program’s curriculum, also suited for accountants seeking to upgrade their skills, was developed in collaboration with top-level accounting and business experts to provide a practical graduate accounting education.

What sets this program apart from others is that you can earn a graduate degree in your “fifth year” of school – over two summers and the Fall and Spring semesters in between. You’ll take only one online course during the two semesters and attend classes during the summer. Accounting firms like this option because they are less busy during the summer, so you can more easily fit in attending classes.

Candidates in this 30-credit program are expected to fulfill all degree requirements within a maximum of five years after beginning their studies. The program itself can be readily completed in 14 months. Special topics covered include:

  • financial instruments
  • financial statement analysis
  • international accounting

Alumni of the professional accounting program have a broad skill set. Most alumni opt for a career in public accounting or private industry, serving as executives of large multinational corporations, partners in major CPA firms, and managing partners or officers in private firms. Specifically, our graduates have attained employment at:
