College of Arts & Sciences

There are many ways to get involved in theatre at Seton Hall University.

  • SHU students in London with the Theatre in London course.
    London
    Audition for a production
  • Volunteer on a production crew
  • Join the Theatre Council
  • Enroll in Theatre courses

One of the best ways to get involved is to audition for Department of Communication and The Arts and student productions. Audition notices are generally posted around the campus two weeks prior to the rehearsals for an upcoming production. The best place to find information is on the Theatre Message Board located in the basement of Fahy Hall.  No experience is necessary and if you don't get cast in a role you are always welcome to work on the production behind the scenes.  Involvement in productions is open to all students.

The Theatre Council, an official Student Government Association (SGA) organization, is always looking for new members. The council plays a significant role in helping to develop theatre at Seton Hall and produces student-directed productions throughout the year.  Join their e-mail list for updates and current events by e-mailing the Theatre Council advisor Professor Deirdre Yates at deirdre.yates@shu.edu or by attending bi-monthly meetings.

The Department of Communication offers a B.A. in Theatre and Performance, with courses ranging from Acting and Directing to Set Design and Lighting Design to Introduction to the Theatre, the American Stage and the Irish Stage, among others. These courses can serve to introduce or enhance a student's theatrical awareness and are open to all Seton Hall students. Theatre courses increase a student's communication skills, poise, creativity and their understanding of culture and society.  The study abroad course, Theatre in London, is a great enhancement to any degree program.  You don't have to want to be an actor to study theatre!

There are also many theatre opportunities off campus in New York and New Jersey. Seton Hall students participate in internship programs with The New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, The Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn and many others. The Department of Communication offers a wide variety of wonderful internship opportunities locally and in New York.
