College of Arts & Sciences

Research Opportunities Abound
The largest college at Seton Hall, the College of Arts and Sciences serves 55% of undergraduate and 11% of graduate students. We offer small classes with dedicated faculty who pay personal attention to your academic experience and foster a deep sense of community.

We offer you an opportunity to study and collaborate with these distinguished scholars and teachers as, together, you develop new concepts and research meaningful topics. Learn from such professors as:

  • Lonnie Athens, Ph.D., author and professor of criminology, who has served as a consultant and expert witness on capital murder and murder cases;
  • Sulie Chang, Ph.D., professor of biological sciences, who has received more than $2.5 million in National Institutes of Health grants for her research related to molecular neurobiology and cell biology; and
  • Joseph Marbach, Ph.D., acting dean of the College and associate professor of political science, who is quoted regularly in the media — local and national — on topics related to politics and elections.

Faculty work closely with students on research, a unique opportunity for our undergraduate students starting their sophomore year. Students are currently involved with the following research in the College:

  • Students have worked with Cherubim Quizon, Ph.D., assistant professor of anthropology in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, on projects such as an ethnographic study on a segment of Facebook.com and a study on the aesthetics and religious significance of food in contemporary Buddhist practices in urban temples in Tokyo.

Our Center for Community Research and Engagement also offers students the opportunity to conduct service learning projects in their academic coursework under the guidance of professors. Past opportunities include:

  • fundraising research for local arts and nonprofit organizations and the development of SAT tutoring programs for Newark, New Jersey youth;
  • creating marketing campaigns for local nonprofits; and
  • participating in the policy making and design process and testing for local water quality and environmental revitalization projects.

Connect with faculty involved in exciting research projects and learn how you can get involved.
