College of Arts & Sciences
Italian Studies Program

Thanks to the hard work of its faculty and generous support from alumni and friends, Seton Hall is now the home of the Charles and Joan Alberto Italian Studies Institute which organizes lectures, symposia, and other cultural events devoted to the promotion of Italian and Italian American culture, and of the Joseph M. and Geraldine C. LaMotta Lecture Series, which brings to campus speaker from around the country and Italy. The University further provides students with an Italian Studies Program which offers classes in all areas of Italian culture: History, Language Study, Literature, History of Art and Music.  The Department of Modern Languages offers flexible and stimulating major and minor programs of study in Italian language, literature and civilization.  These programs are supported by an excellent and growing collection of Italian books in the Valente Collection of Walsh Library (located on the third floor Rotunda of the library), a significant and generous gift from Mr. Salvatore Valente.  Further, our program runs the Study Abroad program Seton Hall in Rome, in what is perhaps the most beautiful city in the world.  Seton Hall students have the option of studying in Italy during the summer and earn credits toward their diplomas at the South Orange campus.

Seton Hall offers courses in Italian language, literature, history, civilization, and cinema, theater, opera and art history. Students of Italian have also the option to do internships for major companies and government offices that work with Italy. Combined with other programs of study, these courses and internships offer a broad and stimulating education which prepares today's young person for a career in international business, diplomacy, commerce and teaching, while also providing an excellent preparation for graduate school.  Recent graduates have found employment in education, tourism, in the fashion industry and in international business, and some have gone on to the best Law Schools in the United States.

Italian language study is available at all levels, from Elementary to Advanced: class sizes are small; and we offer a visionary technological approach.  Movies, art shows, lectures and concerts complement our programs of study and connect students' families and the community around us with the study of one of the world's most fascinating civilizations.
