Our faculty strive to provide an outstanding educational experience for our students. The department has recently introduced a new introductory course sequence on computational thinking and program design for computing undergraduates. This course sequence is based on novel and well-established principles of computer science education, whose effectiveness has been verified by extensive studies. All our faculty is committed to teaching computer science in the context of applications which is important for careers in any sector of society.
Faculty and students conduct research in the areas of software engineering, programming languages and symbolic computation. This work is nationally and internationally recognized. Our faculty frequently participate in conferences by presenting papers, and by serving on program committees or organizing committees. Students assist faculty with their research, some of which receives federal funding.
Our students have access to a variety of computing facilities. The department maintains a state-of-the-art computer lab designed for collaborative work. The lab consists of different islands with large LCD displays used for group work. Students have access to two different high-performance computing clusters. Moreover, all students receive laptops through the Department of Information Technology. All our classrooms are equipped with wireless access.
Recognizing the importance of international experience in today's work place, the department offers a variety of study abroad opportunities. Our newest offering is an exchange program in computer science with the Johannes Kepler University Linz (JKU) in Linz, Austria.
Computer science students are being encouraged to pursue internships which are important for a successful entry into the job market after graduation. Graduates find employment in areas as diverse as telecommunications, web design, news media, insurance, finance, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and many others. Others pursue careers in government, education and academia.
