College of Arts and Sciences
About the Department

Through our course offerings, study abroad programs, student organizations and clubs, and faculty whose research interests span diverse ancient and modern foreign cultures, the mission of the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures is to help students develop foreign language competence, a global perspective, and an understanding of the literatures and intellectual achievements of civilizations both ancient and modern.

In studying Ancient Greek, Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Spanish, and Russian, our students consider religion, philosophy, mythology, politics, history, drama and film, art and architecture, and ideas about class, race, and gender.  Our classes are cross-listed with Archaeology, Catholic Studies, English, History, Political Science, Religion, and Women¹s Studies.  Our faculty play important roles in the University Honors Program as well as cross-disciplinary programs in Asian Studies, Italian Studies, Russian and East European Studies, and Latin American and Latino/Latina Studies. We recognize that quality teaching and research are primary responsibility, and our faculty is devoted to excellence in undergraduate and graduate instruction, and to fostering close teacher-student relationships.
