Seton Hall University acknowledges the passing of John DeFrancis on January 2 2009.  John DeFrancis worked at Seton Hall University in the Department of Far Eastern Studies’ Chinese Studies, authoring textbooks for Mandarin Chinese in the early 1960s.  At Seton Hall, our students have greatly benefited from his expertise in the field of teaching and learning the Chinese language.  We express our gratitude for his work, dedication and excellence in the field, and express our condolences to Dr. DeFrancis’ friends and family.

The audio materials to accompany the John DeFrancis' Chinese textbook series (available from Yale University Press)  are available through the Language Resource Center.  The original recordings were produced at Seton Hall University in Fahy Hall on reel-to-reel tapes.   Over 100 hours of audio material were recorded.
 
Currently, the audio to accompany the following texts is available in digital format (audio CDs or MP3 CDs):

  • Beginning Chinese
  • Beginning Chinese Reader 
  • Intermediate Chinese
  • Intermediate Chinese Reader
  • Advanced Chinese
  • Advanced Chinese Reader

Audio material is no longer available on audio cassettes.
