2011 Winter Concert at SOPAC

Auditions for both the Music Performance Major and Comprehensive Music Major (music education) will be held on Saturday, April 11th, 2015 at the Corrigan Hall Music Center.

  • Please Note: Applicants must be accepted at Seton Hall University via the University’s admissions process before the Music Program can admit them to the Major in Music.

Audition requirements for Seton Hall Music Major by category:

Piano

  • Two contrasting Classical selections of at least intermediate level (one slower, showing tone and musicality; the other faster showing technical ability)
  • 4-octave scales (hands together) in A, B, Eb and Gb Major and d, g and c# minor (any form)
  • Sight reading
  • All music must be memorized

Voice

  • Three contrasting songs: one in English; one in Italian; and one in a language of the applicant’s choice
  • All music must be memorized

Percussion

  • Snare drum etude demonstrating highest level of reading and technical ability
  • Mallet etude demonstrating highest level of ability
  • Major scales (Marimba, Xylophone or Vibraphone)
  • Tympani etude demonstrating highest level of ability
  • Tympani tuning
  • Students with drum set experience can demonstrate Jazz, Rock and Latin styles (not required)

Guitar

Classical:
  • One study by Sor, Carcassi, or Brouwer (or study by comparable composer)
  • Two contrasting selections of applicant’s choice from Renaissance, Baroque, or Classical periods
  • Major and minor scales two or three octaves

Jazz:
  • One Blues selection and two tunes of contrasting style and tempo (ballad, swing, Latin, etc.)
  • Seventh chords and inversions
  • Major and minor scales all keys

Woodwind and Brass Instruments

  • Chromatic scale to fullest range possible
  • Two major scales of the applicant’s choice to fullest range possible
  • Two contrasting selections of at least intermediate level (one slower, showing tone and musicality; the other faster showing technical ability) that best demonstrate the applicant's skill level
  • Sight reading

String Instruments

  • Two major scales of the applicant’s choice to fullest range possible
  • Two contrasting selections of at least intermediate level (one slower, showing tone and musicality; the other faster showing technical ability) that best demonstrate the applicant's skill level
  • One short study or etude
  • Sight reading
  • All music must be memorized
