The program at Seton Hall provides a foundation for understanding philosophy and its history. Students are encouraged to think critically about philosophical issues that arise concerning ethics, politics, reality, and knowledge. The flexibility of the philosophy program enables each student to choose his or her specific area of interest. Yet our offerings are sufficiently diverse for students to acquire a solid and rich background in philosophy. The philosophy faculty are active scholars and also dedicated teachers. The classes offered are small enough to encourage an ongoing dialogue among students and professors.
The philosophy major provides students with a solid foundation in the field. The flexibility of the major will appeal to students who would like to double major in philosophy and other disciplines, such as English, political science, history, and religion, as well as have a focus on pre-law.
The major in philosophy requires students to complete 30 credits of coursework. To receive the degree, students must complete the core curriculum requirements in the College of Arts and Sciences and the necessary number of electives. In the major students are required to have a minimum G.P.A. of 2.5 overall and in their philosophy courses. Those students who qualify may join the International Philosophy Honor Society Phi Sigma Tau.
