College of Arts & Sciences
Overview

Through the major in Comprehensive Music, Seton Hall University students seeking New Jersey certification in teaching music are offered a range of courses in music history, theory, and conducting; a diverse selection of ensembles; and private lessons on their instrument or voice type. Juries, workshops, and recitals throughout the academic year offer opportunities for solo performing experience, and study in the major culminates in a public senior recital. Students are given exposure to major performing artists through concerts presented by Seton Hall's Arts Council Concert Series and Jazz 'n the Hall, and related clinics and master classes provide opportunities for hands-on work. Because of our small classes and high teacher-to-student ratio, we are able to listen to the needs of each individual involved in our program and offer a personalized education in music. To compliment the program's discipline-specific focus, the Bachelor of Arts degree provides a strong foundation in the liberal arts.

Comprehensive Music majors must first be accepted to the College of Education and Human Services with a major in secondary education and then declare a second major in music. An audition to the Music Program is required for admission to the major, and students are accepted on voice, piano, and selected orchestral instruments.  Learn more about the audition process »

Comprehensive Music majors begin field experience in their sophomore year, conclude student teaching in their final semester, and are placed in the very best districts with outstanding music educators as mentors.

Students considering majoring in music education may be interested in pursing a Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance.
