The many dimensions of Catholicism come alive for students participating in the Catholic Studies Program at Seton Hall University. It is the only undergraduate major in Catholic Studies in the New York/New Jersey area. Discover the interplay of Catholicism and philosophy in Augustine, Aquinas and contemporary Catholic writers.  Examine the classics of Catholic literature, such as Confessions of St. Augustine and Dante's Divine Comedy, and read more recent Catholic writers such as Flannery O'Connor and Walker Percy. Engage in a hands-on examination of Catholicism's impact on the cultural problems of our day.

This major is ideal on its own or as a double major.  The Catholic Studies curriculum consists of 36 credits of which 18 credits are required, including courses such as Catholic Belief and Thought, Catholicism and Art, Catholicism in Literature and Catholic Social Teaching.  The remaining 18 credits are interdisciplinary electives of which 12 credits focus on two concentrations: Catholic Intellectual Heritage or Catholic Cultural Heritage.  Foreign study opportunities in Rome and other locations are also available.  A Catholic Studies minor (18 credits) and a certificate in Catholic Studies (15 credits) are also available.

Students can choose Catholic Studies as their only major or they can declare Catholic Studies as a second major at the end of their first year, as long as they have sophomore status and a minimum GPA of 2.5.  In order to graduate, students must complete the program in Catholic Studies, including the final Integrating Seminar in Catholic Studies.

A bachelor's degree in Catholic Studies is an excellent foundation for graduate school and your professional life.   Opportunities for continued studies include theology, art and music, diplomacy, law, education, history and social work.
