Teaching Assistantships require native or near-native command of the language. Prior teaching experience greatly enhances an applicant's prospects. Assistantships are normally awarded for one (1) academic year.

A second year is possible, depending on departmental needs and evaluation of a prior year's service. All Teaching Assistants are expected to study toward the M.A. Program in Asian Studies and to work 20 hours a week.

All applicants who are unavailable for personal interviews should send a cassette tape exhibiting their command of Chinese and English for Chinese Teaching Assistantships, and of Japanese and English for Japanese Teaching Assistantships."
