Barer Scholarship in Life Sciences

  • High achieving students entering their junior or senior year and majoring in a life science. Must demonstrate superior academic performance and an interest in a life science career. Minimum GPA: 3.25.
  • Award: $2,500 award administered by the Independent Colleges of NJ.

Campion College

  • Any undergraduate student eligible for study at Campion College, just outside of Sydney, Australia.  Scholarship requires a 300 word essay, geared toward the interest of the parties granting the scholarship.

Chemistry Scholarships for African American, Hispanic, and American Indian Students

  • If you are an African American, Hispanic, or American Indian high school senior or college freshman, sophomore, or junior pursuing a college degree in the chemical sciences or chemical technology, you may be eligible.
  • Award: up to $5,000 are given to qualified applicants based on academic standing, financial need, career objective, leadership skills, and involvement in school activities and community service.

Department of Homeland Security Undergraduate Fellowship

  • Sophomores, juniors and seniors majoring in a science, technology, or mathematics discipline and pursuing research in a homeland security area. (See website.) Minimum GPA: 3.3. Must commit to a summer internship and a 1 year service requirement in an approved institution after graduation. For U.S. citizens.
  • Award: Two year appointments provide full tuition and a stipend of $1,000/month for 9 months during the academic year as well as a $5,000 stipend for the mandatory10-week summer internship.

 Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program

  • Sophomores and juniors pursuing careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. Minimum GPA: 3.7.  Requires SHU endorsement.
  • Award: Funds for undergraduate tuition and other expenses, up to $7,500 annually. 300 awards per year.

Hertz Graduate Fellowship

  • Accomplished seniors majoring in an applied physical science and pursuing a Ph.D. in a field and school supported by the Hertz Foundation. Must be willing to commit skills to U.S. in a time of national emergency. For citizens or permanent residents of the U.S.
  • Award: The five year graduate fellowship provides full tuition and a stipend ranging from $31,000 to $36,000 per year.

Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship Program

  • Outstanding students who will be juniors in the upcoming fall term.  Must have at least a 3.0 GPA and a major in an area related to oceanic or atmospheric science, research, technology, or education, including biological sciences, physics, mathematics, and other disciplines. For U.S. citizens.
  • Award: Up to $8,000 of academic assistance per academic year for full-time study and a 10-week, paid internship during the summer at NOAA or a NOAA approved facility.

Knowles Science Teaching Fellowship Program

  • Recent graduates with a record of achievement in a biological or physical science, engineering or mathematics, and a desire to teach high school science and/or mathematics in the U.S. For students who are not yet certified. U.S. citizenship not required.
  • Award: Tuition assistance and a monthly stipend while participating in a recognized teacher education program.  Professional and financial support for up to five years.
  • Deadline: January 14, 2009. Next application period projected to begin in August 2009.

Microsoft Scholarships

  • Undergraduates with financial need and a demonstrated interest in computer science.  Four scholarship categories: general, women, underrepresented minority groups, and students with disabilities.  Minimum GPA: 3.0. Must also apply for a summer internship. Open to international students.
  • Award: Scholarship provides full or partial tuition costs for one year.
  • Deadline: February 1, 2009

NASA: The Motivating Undergraduates in Science and Technology Project

  • MUST awards scholarships and internships to undergraduates pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, fields. The MUST Project is open to all students and is particularly focused on engaging students from underserved and underrepresented groups to enter STEM fields.
  • MUST Project will support approximately 100 undergraduate students with a one-year competitive scholarship of up to one-half of tuition, not to exceed $10,000. Students who maintain the required minimum grade point average will be eligible for a paid internship at a NASA center. Additionally, students will benefit year-round from tutoring, lecture series and mentoring from STEM faculty and peers.

National Defense Science & Engineering Graduate Fellowship

  • Graduating seniors or graduate students pursuing graduate degrees in areas of military importance. Evaluated on academic record and overall ability. Women, persons with disabilities, and members of minority groups are encouraged to apply. For U.S. citizens and nationals.
  • Award: 3-year appointment includes full tuition plus an annual stipend of $30,500.

The National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program

  • The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees in the U.S. and abroad. Women, minorities and people with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
  • Award: Fellows benefit from a three-year annual stipend of $30,000 along with a $10,500 cost of education allowance for tuition and fees, a one-time $1,000 travel allowance and the freedom to conduct their own research at any accredited U.S., or foreign institution of graduate education they choose. Also receives TeraGrid Supercomputer access.

NIH Undergraduate Scholarship Program

  • Exceptional undergraduates from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to biomedical, behavioral, and social science health related research careers. Minimum GPA: 3.5. Must commit to an internship and one year full time employment at the NIH. For U.S. citizens, national, or qualified noncitizens.
  • Award: 1-year appointment, renewable to up to 4 years. Stipend provides $20,000 per academic year in tuition and living expenses

NJEOF Scholarship 

  • Applicant must be a New Jersey resident and be accepted to a college of osteopathic medicine.  Applicant should rank in top quarter of class and have a minimum of 3.0 GPA.  Selection is based upon academic achievement, financial need, motivation, and professional promise as an osteopathic physician.  Recipient must agree to become a member of the New Jersey Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (NJOAPS) and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), complete his or her education, receiving the D.O. degree, and participate in AOA-approved internship/residency programs.
  • Award: Minimum: $5,000.00; Average: $6,500.00; Maximum: $8,000.00;.

 Nonproliferation Graduate Program (NGP) Fellowships

  • Graduate students (enrolled or recently graduated) who are eligible for high-level security clearance and have a career interest in nuclear nonproliferation and U.S. national security interests  U.S. citizenship required.
  • Award: The Fellowship is a 12-month appointment in Washington, D.C. Fellows participate in daily activities to support NNSA's global nonproliferation programmatic work. Annual salary of $45,000 ($55,000 for post-doctoral fellows). Benefits include health and dental plans, paid vacation, and paid holidays.

Science, Mathematics, And Research for Transformation Defense Scholarship for Service Program (SMART)

  • Students 18 years of age or older as of August 1, 2009, able to participate in summer internships at DoD laboratories, willing to accept post-graduate employment with the DoD, A student in good standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (as calculated by the SMART application) and,  pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in one of the disciplines listed on the About SMART page. Must be US citizen.
  • Award: Full tuition and education related fees (does not include items such as meal plans, housing, or parking). Cash award paid at a rate of $25,000 - $41,000 depending on prior educational experience (may be prorated depending on award length). Paid summer internships. Health Insurance. Book allowance of $1,000 per academic year, mentoring and employment placement after graduation

Smithsonian Minority Awards Program

  • Minority undergraduates with academic and career goals relevant to the research conducted at Smithsonian museums, research institutes and offices. Check online for a full listing of research areas. Minimum GPA: 3.0.
  • Award: Summer, fall, and spring internships last for 10 weeks and stipends provide $500/week plus some travel expenses.
  • Deadlines: October 1 for spring  & February 1 for summer and fall each year

ThinkSwiss Research Scholarship

  • Juniors, seniors, and graduate students interested in doing research in Switzerland and acting as a student ambassador.  Knowledge of French, German, or Italian useful but not necessary. Requires a letter of affiliation from a Swiss University.
  • Award: Provides 15 scholarships to study at a Swiss University for 2 to 3 months.  Monthly stipend of $700 paid at the conclusion of the internship.

Udall Scholarship

  • Sophomores and juniors who have demonstrated a co a career related to the environment. Must demonstrate leadership, community service and a strong academic record. Udalls are also awarded to Native Americans or Alaska natives studying tribal health care or Native public policy. Minimum GPA: 3.0. Open to U.S. citizens, permanent resident aliens, or U.S. nationals. Requires SHU endorsement.
  • Award: Up to $5,000 for tuition and other expenses.  Udall Scholars must attend an orientation in August to meet other award winners, elected officials, and environmental and tribal leaders. About 80 awards/year.  50 students/year receive an honorable mention award of $350.
