Avar Press Literary Essay Scholarship
  • Open to all students. Applicants must write a 1250- to 1500-word essay analyzing a single aspect of D.J. Solomon's Xen: Ancient English Edition.
  • Award: First prize of $1,000; second prize of $750; third prize of $500.
  • Deadline: Last deadline was January 31, 2012.

  • For all students. Essays will be judged on both style and content. Judges will look for writing that is clear, articulate and logically organized. Winning essays must demonstrate an outstanding grasp of the philosophic meaning of Atlas Shrugged.

  • For all current students. To win, applicant must make a post somewhere on the internet that discusses recycling, and links to Castle Ink's website. The applicant that drives the most traffic to the website wins the scholarship.

  • For any U.S. resident currently enrolled in college or about to begin college.  Applicant must explain how they "reduce, reuse, and recycle."

Christianson Grant
  • For U.S. citizens and permanent residents between the ages of 18 and 28 who have already arranged to participate in a minimum 6-month work, internship, or volunteer abroad program. The grant program does not support independent research projects, academic study abroad programs, missionary work, or religious programs.
  • Award: Ranges between $2,500 and $10,000.
  • Deadline: Rolling deadlines of March 15, July 15, and October 15 each year.

  • Open to all U.S. citizens or legal residents. Only a short essay is required for entry.
  • Award: $1,500 first place, $750 second place, $250 honorable mentions.
  • Deadline: October 17, 2012
 
Common Knowledge Scholarship Foundation
  • Open to all undergraduate and graduate students, including international students. Instead of being judged by academic achievement, essays, or financial need, scholarships are rewarded on the basis of applicants' scores on multiple choice quizzes available on the website.
  • Award: Scholarships range from $250 to $2,500.
  • Deadline: A number of scholarships cycle every month.

Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals
  • For U.S. citizens and permanent residents who will between 18 and 24 years of age at the beginning of the program. Applicants must have completed their general coursework in their intended internship field, as well as have some relevant work experience. German language proficiency is preferred but not required. Intended for students in business, vocational, scientific, engineering, technical, and agricultural fields, though applicants from all fields are encouraged to apply. Participants complete a one-year work-study fellowship involving extensive German language training and a five-month internship in a German-speaking work environment. 
  • Award: A full-year scholarship including round-trip transatlantic flight, university tuition, language training, living stipend, and program-related travel costs in Germany, and health and accident insurance.

Copyright Awareness Scholarship
  • For all students, including international students, who are 25 years of age or younger. Applicants must submit an original creative video that will be used to educate their peers on the importance of intellectual property and copyright law.
  • Award: 1st prize - $5,000; 2nd prize - $3,000; 3rd prize - $2,000
  • Deadline: Last deadline was May 1, 2012.

  • Submit your original artwork, photo, or computer graphic to be placed on the front of a greeting card. For graduate or undergraduate students. For citizens and legal residents of the U.S., including international students with a valid student visa.
  • Award: $10,000

  • For undergraduate, Master's and Ph.D students enrolled at a U.S. institution. U.S. citizenship required.
  • Award: Fully-funded seven to ten week group-based intensive language instruction and extensive cultural enrichment experiences held overseas.  Languages included are: Arabic, Persian: Advanced beginning, intermediate or advanced level; Azerbaijani, Bangla/Bengali, Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Punjabi, Turkish, Urdu: Beginning, intermediate or advanced level; Chinese, Japanese, Russian: Intermediate or advanced level. Travel between the student's U.S. home city and program location, pre-departure orientation costs, applicable visa fees, room and board are covered.

  • For undergraduates and graduates who are attending college in the U.S.; U.S. citizenship not required. Applicants must be able to show evidence of their "active participation in struggles for civil rights, economic justice, international solidarity or other progressive issues."
  • Award: Up to $10,000.

  • Undergraduate and graduate students who demonstrate excellence, a commitment to diversity, and a desire to enter the professorate. U.S. citizenship required.
  • Award: Approximately 60 Predictor Awards at $20,000 per year for up to three years. Approximately 35 Dissertation Awards at $21,000 for one year. Approximately 20 Postdoctoral Awards at $40,000 for one year.

From Failure to Promise Essay Contest
  • For all students who will be enrolled for the fall 2012 semester. Requires a minimum 3.0 GPA. Applicants must submit a minimum 1,000 word essay. See website for more details.

Gen and Kelly Tanabe Scholarship
  • For legal U.S. residents, undergraduate and graduate. Requires an essay of 250 words or less.

Google Policy Fellowship
  • For all students interested in Internet and technology policy. Participants have the opportunity to contribute to the public dialogue on these issues, and explore future academic and professional interests. Fellows spend the summer working at public interest organizations at the forefront of debates on broadband and access policy, content regulation, copyright and trademark reform, consumer privacy, open government, and more. Participating organizations are based in either Washington, DC, San Francisco, CA, Ottawa or Toronto, Canada. Open to international students with a current U.S. or Canadian student visa.
  • Award: A total stipend of $7,500 for the 10 week summer program, disbursed in three parts throughout the summer.
  • Deadline: Last deadline was February 3, 2012.

Hit the Books Scholarship
  • For all students between the ages of 18 and 25. Requires a maximum 500 word essay on the topic of importance of education in the applicant's life and how the scholarship money will assist in accomplishing the applicant's goals. Bonus points will be awarded to those students who find a creative way to include their passion for coffee within their essay without losing sight of the primary topic
  • Award: Up to $500. Winners are required to submit receipts for the educational materials acquired as a result of the scholarship award..

iOme Challenge Essay and Video Contest
  • For all students. Combination essay and video entries must be made by a team of students assisted by a faculty adviser. This year's entries must address the following topic: widespread agreement among economists and public policy experts indicates that individuals and especially Americans have not engaged in long term financial savings at the rate they should to secure their financial futures. This poses significant long-term problems, in particular: 1) citizens may not be adequately prepared financially for their future; and 2) it may put a substantial burden on governmental budgets, especially social benefit programs in the future. International students are welcome to participate, but the team leader must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Award: The winning student team will receive $10,000, and their faculty adviser $2,000. Honorable mention teams will receive $2,000, and their faculty advisers $500.
  • Deadline: Last deadlines were October 31, 2011 for the essay portion and November 21, 2011 for the video portion.

  • For undergraduate and graduate students. Must write an essay about the use of alternative medical approaches in the treatment of cancer.

John Gyles Education Center Scholarship
  • For full-time undergraduate and graduate students who are U.S. or Canadian citizens with a minimum 3.5 GPA. Application requires a 1,500 word book report.
  • Award: $500
  • Deadline: June 1, 2012

  • For all undergraduate and graduate students who are U.S. citizens or legal residents. Requires a maximum 250 word essay.
  • Award: $500
  • Deadline: Scholarship cycles every month. Winners are contacted during the first half of the following month.
 
  • The award is meant to enable the student to gain practical experience in public service by taking a no-pay or low-pay job or internship during a summer or other term. Preference will be given applicants who have already found such a position, but who require additional funds.
  • Award: A prize of two thousand dollars will be awarded to one or more college or university students involved in public service.
  • Deadline: March 15 every year.

Kathryn Davis Fellowships for Peace - Middlebury Language Schools
  • For all students studying or wanting to begin studying Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Japanese, Portuguese, or Russian. Applicants must also submit an application to one of the Middlebury Language Schools. Intended for students with demonstrated interest in one of the following areas (although students studying other subjects are still invited to apply): international, global, or area studies; international politics and economics; peace and security studies; and/or conflict resolution.
  • Award: Covers the full cost of summer language study at a Middlebury Language School, including tuition, room, and board.
  • Deadline: Last deadline was January 30, 2012, but applicants were encouraged to send in their admission applications to one of the language schools far in advance of that deadline.

Life Lessons Scholarship Program
  • Open to all students between the ages of 17 and 24 who have experienced the death of a parent or legal guardian, and who are a legal resident of the United States (including Puerto Rico).  Applicant must submit an essay or video about how the death of their parent or legal guardian effected their life.  
  • Award: Grand prize of $10,000 to the best video or essay; 7 awards of $5,000 to the first runners-up; 6 awards of $2,500 to the second runners-up; 45 awards of $1,000 to the third runners-up.  See website for more details.

Mensa U.S. Scholarship Program
  • For all students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. A local Mensa group in the applicant's area must be participating in the scholarship program; applicants can check this on the website. Requires a maximum 550 word essay explaining the applicant's career, academic and/or vocational goals.
  • Award: Range from $300 to $1,000.
  • Deadline: Applications accepted every year between September 15 and January 15.

New Jersey Roundtable of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) Scholarship

  • For freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and first-year graduate students. Applicants must become a student member of CSCMP to be considered for the scholarship; membership application is available on the website.  Two essays and a letter of recommendation required.
  • Award: Awards range from $250 - $1,000.
  • Deadline: Last deadline was April 13, 2012.

Northwest Perspectives Essay Contest
  • For all students. Requires a maximum 1,500-word essay addressing ideas that affect the Northwest.
  • Award: 1st prize: $500; 2nd prize: $200; 3rd prize: $75.
  • Deadline: Last deadline was January 12, 2012.

  • For students age 22 and under as of the deadline. Applicants must write an essay on the topic "Compassion and the Illiterate Child."
  • Award: $1,000 for 1st place; $500 for 2nd place; $250 for honorable mention.
  • Deadline: Last deadline was May 2, 2012.

Odenza Marketing Scholarship
  • For U.S. or Canadian citizens who will be 25 or under as of March 30, 2012, will not graduate until May 2013 or later, and have a minimum 2.5 GPA. Requires two essays (see website for more details).
  • Award: $500
  • Deadline: September 30, 2012

  • For U.S. citizens who will be enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student as of January 31, 2013. Requires short, creative answers to a few questions as part of the application.

  • Applicants must meet the following requirements: 1) Neither parent has earned a bachelor's degree. 2) Full-time freshman with high school GPA of 2.5, a minimum SAT of 1425 or the equivalent ACT composite, etc.For students currently enrolled at SHU and new transfer students, a cumulative college GPA of 2.5. 3) Preference will be given to students who demonstrate financial need. 4) Evidence of community service, with preference for leadership in service. 5) Preference will be given to students from the Northern New Jersey/New York City metropolitan area, but residence in this region is not required.
  • Award: Scholarships will be awarded up to $3,000 each and will be split evenly across fall and spring semesters. Pick Foundation Scholarships may not be used for summer terms or studies through other institutions.

Project Firefly Contemporary Affairs Essay Competition
  • For all students, as well as recent graduates. The essay competition includes three essay questions; applicants may submit an essay for each question. All essays should be between 800 and 1500 words. See more detailed rules on website.
  • Award: 1,000 Swiss francs (approximately $1,000)
  • Deadline: June 3, 2012

  • For graduate and undergraduate students of any major. Preference is given to those who can satisfy high scholastic requirements and are considering careers in education.
  • Award: Grants are small (averaging $2,000-$3,000) and are meant to be supplementary. Aid is given for the ensuing school year.
  • Deadline: February 1 every year, or the following Monday if it falls on a weekend.
  • For all students, age 18 and older, including international students. Requires a maximum 1,000 word essay.
  • Award: $5,000
  • Deadline: Last deadline was June 15, 2011; no new information yet available.
 
  • For U.S. citizens and permanent residents. Open to undergraduate students under age 30 and graduate students under age 40 who are full-time students and demonstrate financial need, academic ability, and exemplary character.  Requires a minimum GPA of 3.2 and an interview in NYC.
  • Award: Up to $8,500, with possibility to apply for renewal for additional years.
  • Deadline: No deadline; applications are no longer accepted when their quota has been fulfilled.
 
Seton Hall University Servant Leader Scholarship
  • For undergraduate and graduate Seton Hall students. New students (freshmen, transfers, and 1st year graduate students) must show evidence of their academic achievement prior to entrance into Seton Hall University, such as cumulative GPA, standardized test scores (SAT I or ACT for undergraduates), class rank, strength of curriculum, and college GPA (for transfers and graduate students). Current SHU students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA. All applicants must fill out the FAFSA form. Students interested in Catholic studies are especially encouraged to apply.
  • Award: Averages $2,400.
  • Deadline: December 1 every year.

The Steve S. Kang Young Artists and Scholars Fund
  • For all students in the arts, humanities, and sciences. Applicants must be able to demonstrate: (1) good academic or artistic achievement and promise; (2) financial need; and (3) sound character and commitments to science and/or the arts. Although most scholarships are awarded to Korean American students, all students are invited to apply.
  • Award: Ranges from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Deadline: Last deadline was September 30, 2011.

  • UNCF offers many different scholarships with a variety of requirements; opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students in a wide range of majors.  All require at least a 2.5 GPA; some require 3.0 GPA or higher. For most awards, students may be of any race unless otherwise noted. Although many of the opportunities are not open to SHU students since we are not a UNCF institute, there are always a number of scholarships open to students at any university.

Americanism Educational League Essay Contest
  • Open to all undergraduate students.  Applicants must write a maximum 2,000 word essay on a specific topic (see website).

BBG Communications Award
  • For U.S. and Canadian citizens who will be 21 or under as of June 30, 2012, will not graduate before May 2013, and have a minimum GPA of 2.5. Requires two essays; see website for details.

  • Undergraduates who are interested in studying abroad in regions critical to U.S. national security and working for the federal government.  For U.S. citizens.
  • Award: Funds up to one year of study in exchange for a commitment to work for the federal government.  Awards provide up to $8,000 for a summer, $10,000 for a semester, or $20,000 for a full academic year.

Charley Wootan Grant Program
  • Applicants must be high school seniors or graduates who plan to enroll, or are students already enrolled, at least half-time, in an undergraduate course of study at a Title IV, two- or four-year college or university, or vocational-technical school, must demonstrate financial need, and be eligible to receive Title IV federal financial aid funding.  Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Applicants must complete a FAFSA form.
  • Award: Grants ranging from $1,000 to $4,394 to qualified undergraduate students.  Amounts awarded will be based upon a student's unmet financial need.
  • Deadline: Application cycle for study abroad programs that begin between December 15, 2012 and April 15, 2013 opens in August 2012, with applications due in October 2012 (specific day not yet announced).

College Parents of America Exceptional Leader Scholarship
  • For all full-time students who are pursuing their first undergraduate degree. Freshmen must have been honor students at their high school; upperclassmen must have a minimum 3.0 GPA. All applicants must demonstrate outstanding leadership skills inside and outside the classroom.
  • Award: 5 awards of $1,000
  • Deadline: Last deadline was January 31, 2012.
 
Frugal Dad Scholarship
  • For undergraduate students who are U.S. citizens or legal U.S. residents and at least 16 years of age. Requires an essay. Selection will be based on academic history, extracurricular involvement, and ingenuity of essay entries.
  • Award: $5,000
  • Deadline: Last deadline was April 30, 2012.

  • Undergraduates who qualify for Pell Grants and need extra funds to participate in a study abroad program. Low-income students from diverse ethnic backgrounds, students with disabilities, and students of non-traditional age are encouraged to apply. For U.S. citizens.
  • Award: Up to $5,000 to study abroad for at least 4 weeks and up to one academic year. Over 1,200 awards/year. The Gilman scholarship also provides an additional $3,000 to study a critical needs language: Arabic, Chinese, Turkic, Persian, Indic, Korean, or Russian.
  • Deadline: Last deadline was March 1, 2012.
 
Loyas Scholarship
  • For incoming or current undergraduate students at Seton Hall.  Applicants must have an appreciation of Polish culture, tradition, history, and community life. Applicants must also file a FAFSA form, and a minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. Those selected for the award are required to actively participate in Seton Hall's Slavic Club.
  • Award: Amount not specified.
  • Deadline: April 15 every year.

  • For U.S. citizens or permanent residents who are full-time undergraduates, will have completed at least 30 credits by June 2011, and have a minimum 2.5 GPA.  "Commitment to education, community service, leadership, and academic standing" are taken into the most consideration. Essays and letter of recommendation required for application.
  • Award: 20 Pearson Prize National Fellows receive $10,000 paid out over two years; 50 Pearson Prize Community Fellows receive a one-time prize of $500.

Platt Family Scholarship Essay Contest
  • For full-time undergraduate students attending a U.S. college or university; U.S. citizenship not required. Requires a 1,500 to 5,000 word essay answering the question, "Did Lincoln free the slaves?" See website for more details.

Womenetics Advancing Aspirations Global Scholarship
  • For all undergraduate students, both women and men, who are legal U.S. residents. Requires a 2,500 word essay. See website for more details.
  • Award: Two first place winners receive $5,000 and a trip to Washington, D.C. to attend the 11th Annual Vital Voices Global Leadership Awards at the Kennedy Center; eight essay finalists will each win $1,500.

For Incoming and Current Freshmen

 
CIA Undergraduate Scholarship Program
  • For incoming freshmen and current freshmen and sophomores who are U.S. citizens. Incoming freshmen must be 18 by April 1st of their senior year, have a high school GPA of at least 3.0, and 1500 SAT (1000 Math & Critical Reading, 500 Writing) or 21 ACT scores or higher. Current college students must have a college GPA of at least 3.0 and be attending college full-time. All applicants must demonstrate financial need by showing that their family is within the household income ceiling up to $70,000 for a family of four, and $80,000 for a family of five or more. Participants work in Washington D.C. during the summer.
  • Award: An annual salary, benefits package, and up to $18,000 to be applied to tuition or other school expenses. Travel expenses to and from Washington D.C. and a housing allowance for the summer are also provided.
  • Deadline: Applications are accepted from August 1st to October 15th every year.

College Parents of America First Generation College-Bound Scholarship
  • For full-time freshmen who are the first in their immediate family (including parents, siblings, and any other family residing in the same household) to attend college. Applicants must have been in the top 50% of their high school graduating class.
  • Award: 5 awards of $1,000
  • Deadline: Last deadline was January 31, 2012.

Liberty Mutual Responsible Scholars Scholarship Program
  • For full-time freshmen, sophomores, and juniors who have a minimum 3.0 GPA and have initiated a service or volunteer program that directly impacts or actively engages their campus community.
  • Award: A monetary scholarship award (not specified on the website) as well as a sponsored trip to Boston where recipients meet with Liberty Mutual executives, learn about career opportunities and enjoy a tour of the city.
  • Deadline: Last deadline was in late 2011/early 2012. Information about next cycle not yet available.

For Sophomores

 
CIA Undergraduate Scholarship Program

  • Sophomores and juniors with outstanding academic records who are interested in studying, doing research, or completing an internship in Germany. Proficiency in German is not mandatory. For U.S. or Canadian citizens, permanent residents or foreign nationals studying in the U.S.
  • Award: Scholarships provide a stipend and funds for travel, research or an internship.  Supports a semester of study or an entire academic year, which runs from October through July in Germany.
  • Deadline: Last deadline was January 31, 2012 for 2012/13 academic year.

Humanity in Action Fellowship
  • For sophomores, juniors, seniors, and recent graduates of any nationality. Participants spend 5 weeks over the summer in Europe exploring national histories of discrimination and resistance, as well as examples of issues affecting different minority groups today. Each program is highly interdisciplinary, and features daily lectures and discussions with renowned academics, journalists, politicians, and activists, as well as site visits to government agencies, non-profit and community organizations, museums, and memorials. The programs seek to highlight different models of action to remedy injustice.

  • For citizens of any country who will have earned their Bachelor's degree by June 2012 and are 21 years of age or older. Ideal applicants will have demonstrated interest and knowledge of social enterprise; demonstrated leadership in a professional or academic setting; a professional or academic background in business, economics, development, international affairs, education, or a related fields; and international travel experience, preferably in the developing world. Participants serve a 10-month fellowship in India during which they experience cultural and social immersion into the field of social enterprise.

Intercollegiate Studies Institute - Graduate Fellowships Program

Jesuit Volunteer Corps
  • A faith-based volunteer program for students 21 or older who will have received a college degree by the time they begin the program, or have applicable work experience. Participants serve as full-time volunteers for one year (domestic program) or two years (international program), living in the same communities as those they serve, including people who are low-wage earners, homeless, unemployed, refugees, diagnosed with AIDS, elderly, street youth, former gang members, abused, mentally ill, or developmentally disabled. U.S. and Canadian citizens can serve domestically or internationally; international students are eligible only for the domestic (U.S.) program.
  • Award: Most travel, including round trip airfare for those serving internationally, is covered, along with room, board, health insurance, and a small stipend.

Judicial Studies Fellowship Program

For the 10-month fellowship, participants work full-time at California trial and appellate courts while simultaneously earning credits as graduate students in Public Policy and Administration at Sacramento State University. NYC Urban Fellows Program
  • For seniors and recent graduates, including international students who can demonstrate their eligibility to work in the U.S. for the duration of the 9-month fellowship. Participants are placed in Mayoral offices and various other city agencies, learning about public policy through a hands-on approach. Participants also attend a series of workshops that help promote a deep understanding of the structure of New York City government.  The program seeks to ensure that every Urban Fellow comprehends the intricacies of City, State and Federal finance and the interaction between these levels of government. Also includes several trips to Albany and Washington D.C.

Judicial Studies Fellowship Program

National Bureau of Asian Research - Next Generation Fellowship

No specific major is required, although the fellowship has attracted many students from the fields of international relations, business, public health, and law. Participants serve a one-year fellowship in Seattle, Washington and gain further knowledge of Asia and an understanding of the U.S. foreign policymaking process by: supporting NBR research projects; conducting independent research under the guidance of NBR fellowship staff and two NBR affiliated scholars; co-managing the NBR Alumni Network blog; arranging seminars and discussion forums hosting Asia experts; and traveling to Washington, D.C., to participate an orientation and the briefing of research findings to relevant constituents within the policy community.

National Security Agency Summer Language Program
  • For sophomores, juniors, seniors, or graduate students who are U.S. citizens and are studying one of the following languages: Chinese, Korean, Arabic, Pashto, Persian-Farsi, Russian or Urdu. Requires a 3.0 GPA, with a 3.5 GPA in language studies preferred, and students must continue to take at least one language course each semester. A 12-week summer internship program that may continue for a second summer, and may also include a conditional job offer from the National Security Agency after graduation.

Robert Bosch Foundation Fellowship Program
  • For U.S. citizens who will be between 23 and 34 years of age on the application deadline. Requires a graduate degree or equivalent training in business administration, journalism, law, public policy, international relations, or a closely related field, and at least two years of relevant work experience. No German language ability is required, but applicants must be willing to participate in language training. Participants serve a 9-month fellowship during which they have the opportunity to experience two high-level work phases at leading institutions in Germany, customized to their interests. Past host institutions have included federal and local government, private corporations, media outlets, and NGOs. German language training is also provided in the U.S. and in Germany.
  • Award: Travel and language training expenses are covered, and a 2,000 euro monthly stipend and insurance are provided. For those traveling with a spouse and/or children, financial support for such accompanying family, including 50% of travel costs, supplemental living stipend, health insurance, and limited funding for language training is also provided.

Soros Fellowship for New Americans

Women's Research and Educational Institute - Congressional Fellowships on Women and Public Policy

  • For undergraduate and graduate students who are U.S. citizens and are attending college in the state in which they legally reside. Excellent academic and standardized test performance and demonstrable financial need are required to qualify for this award. Law students are not eligible.
  • Award: Interest-free loans ranging from $5,000 to $15,000, with a $50,000 lifetime cap per student. Loans must be repaid starting one year after the student graduates.
  • Deadline: Last deadline was April 9, 2012.

Law Enforcement Officer Memorial Scholarship
  • For full-time undergraduate students who are the dependent child of a New Jersey law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty. 
  • Award: Specific amount not provided on website. Varies by student; renewable for up to 4 years.
  • Deadline: October 1 every year for the fall and spring terms; March 1 for the spring term.

  •  Applicant must be a New Jersey resident and a full-time student at a NJ accredited college, and have completed at least four full semesters of study. Applicants must be majoring in a field related to environmental conservation, including such majors as environmental science or journalism. Selection is based upon academic commitment to a field of conservation, demonstrated financial need and scholastic ability, involvement in extra curricular activities or volunteer projects related to conservation.
  • Award: $1,500
  • Deadline: Last deadline was May 1, 2012.

New Jersey Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators Scholarship
  • For NJ residents who are in the final year of their program (for last year's scholarship, applicants must have been planning to graduate by December 2011). Applicants must be full-time students who excel academically and have financial hardship. Students must be nominated by a member of the association; see website for more details.
  • Award: $1,000
  • Deadline: Last deadline was March 10, 2012.

  • Applicant must be the dependent child of a career New Jersey firefighter who is an FMBA member.
  • Award: $3,000 each year
  • Deadline: March 1 every year.
 
  • Offers scholarships to those who have been in foster care or adopted after age 12 and are between the ages of 16-23.
  • Award: Based on the criteria that make you eligible for the NJFC Scholarship money, the staff at Foster and Adoptive Family Services (FAFS) will discuss what benefits you can receive.
  • Contact: Call 800-222-0047 and ask to speak to a scholarship representative,  or e-mail scholarships@fafsonline.org.
  • Deadline: October 1st, 2012 for the fall 2012 semester.
 
New Jersey World Trade Center Scholarship
  • For full-time undergraduate students who are dependent children and surviving spouses of New Jersey residents who were killed in or who died as a result of the terrorist attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001 or who died as result of illness caused by exposure to the attack sites. Eligibility to apply is limited to eight years from the date of the child's high school graduation and eight years from the date of death for the spouse.
  • Award: Up to $5,000.
  • Deadline: October 1 every year for fall and spring semesters; March 1 for spring semester.

  • Applicant must be the dependent of a New Jersey emergency service member or law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty. Applicant must be a resident of New Jersey attending a New Jersey institution of higher education as an undergraduate on at least a half-time basis.
  • Award: Grants pay the actual cost of tuition up to the highest tuition charged at a New Jersey public institution of higher education.
  • Deadline: Dates vary; check website for more info.
 

 

Scholarships for Women

  • For women who have already earned a Bachelor's degree, but are returning to school for a second Bachelor's degree, Master's degree, or technical or professional training. For U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
  • Award: Ranges from $2,000 - $12,000.
  • Deadline: Last deadline was December 15, 2011. Next application cycle opens on August 1, 2012 for the 2013-14 school year.

New Leadership New Jersey Program
  • For undergraduate women interested in becoming effective leaders in politics, public policy, and public service. Participants attend a 6-day residential program at Rutgers University in June. During the program, participants meet with successful women leaders to discuss politics, public policy and the importance of women’s leadership; participate in skills-building workshops on networking, public speaking and strategic communication; network with a diverse group of women who share a commitment to shaping the public agenda and making a difference in their communities; and practice leadership through action.
  • Award: All costs associated with the program, including housing and food, are covered.
  • Deadline: Last deadline was March 28, 2012.

  • For non-traditional female students who earned their high school diploma or GED on or before Sept. 2002 and who will not graduate before May 2013. Open to international students.
  • Award: Scholarships of either $10,000 or $30,000.
  • Deadline: Last deadline was January 3, 2012.

Women in Defense - Horizons Scholarship
  • For women who are U.S. citizens. Applicants must be juniors, seniors, or graduate students, have a minimum 3.25 GPA, demonstrate interest in pursuing a career related to national security or defense, and demonstrate financial need. No specific major is required as long as the applicant can successfully demonstrate relevance to a career in the areas of national security or defense.
  • Award: Range from $500 to $12,000.
  • Deadline: July 1, 2012

Young Women in Public Affairs Award
  • For female students age 19 or younger who can demonstrate their active commitment to volunteerism, experience in local or student government, and volunteer leadership achievements.
  • Award: Up to $3,000.
  • Deadline: Applicants must submit their application through their local Zonta Club. Contact the Zonta Club of Essex County for deadline information.
